We were so excited to see that Erica won the Garmin GPS because she's an avid hiker and in an area of California that definitely has a lot of unmarked trails and terrain. She's never owned a GPS so we can't wait to see what she does with it. Maybe she'll help Hike it Baby mamas in her area make great maps of hikes that are kiddo friendly.

Tell us about your favorite hike in the world
Wow! There are so many! I grew up in the Northeast, hiking the White Mountains and Presidential Range of New Hampshire. The woods of New England are so special and diverse, and of course the fall colors will knock your socks off. My favorite hike growing up was the Tuckerman Ravine Trail to summit Mt. Washington, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Although well traveled by many a tourist, this was my backyard in vacation months and I loved the views. From the summit you look upon the entire Presidential range and it is breathtaking. There's something about being on top of it all that gives you some perspective on life not found in the everyday.
My most favorite trek I've ever completed is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand. I was lucky enough to spend some time traveling solo for several months in New Zealand and this hike is incredible. You hike past mountain springs, old lava flows, active volcanic craters and thermal steam vents, with crazy emerald blue lakes, finishing the hike in a temperate rain forest with a huge waterfall. This trek is definitely top in the world for what I've seen and there was something so sacred about the landscape there. It's difficult to put it to words. Perhaps it was the time in my life, the empowerment that comes with solo female travel, or just the magic of nature on its own but the experience was profound.
Someday I hope Walker gets to experience these places and others that will help shape the man he becomes.
Favorite Hike it Baby moment so far?
The best moment I've experienced with Hike it Baby was the first hike I led for Humboldt. I had no idea what to expect and how many mamas would show, and the turn out floored me. We had ten or so Moms and babies and everyone was so stoked to be a part of this new group. The enthusiasm was incredible and I feel so thankful for the community that we are building.
Tell us what you like about Hike it Baby
I like the informal nature of Hike It Baby, and the ability to connect with women who want to be active. I have tried other "mom" type groups, playgroups, nursing circles... and although I always get something positive out of the experience I always feel out of place. But strapping my baby on me and getting out in nature comes so easily and naturally and I am so happy to find others to do it with.
The group is great because if you can make it, great, if not, no worries. It's so hard as a new mom to plan and organize and commit, because every day is something new. I am typically someone who likes to hold to my commitments and feel terribly bad when I cannot; so I am appreciating the ability to be a part of something, but when it doesn't work out there's no guilt and there is a whole bunch of understanding.
What is the best advice for a new hiking family?
It's not about the distance or the speed. Instead focus on the fresh air, the beauty that surrounds, and the healthy habits you're teaching your kids. I think nature is a "cure all" - and your kids will thank you for showing them the outdoors and its ability to heal everything from heartache to headaches.
Got a favorite trail trick?
Mmmm, haven't figured any tricks out yet. Unless you consider the car key in the sports bra:)
What kind of terrain do you like best?
I like the hills! It's hard to get the endorphins going when you have a newborn, and those endorphins keep me sane. Carrying my 3 month old (who is already 20 lbs!) and doing hikes with elevation gain makes me feel good. I also enjoy the elevation, because summiting things just feels so satisfying.
Why is it important to you to have your kiddo out in nature?
The world moves so fast and I think having Walker in nature will teach him to move at his own pace.
What kind of gear do you always suggest people get?
Gear that gets you out regardless of the weather. Living in the rainy part of the world, I know if I didn't have rain gear I'd be stuck inside a whole lot more. Whether it's hot or cold, wet or dry...find clothing and gear that doesn't give you excuses.
How stoked are you about your win!? How will you use it?
I'm stoked about my win! Mostly because I never win anything! I haven't quite figured out how I'll use the GPS...probably when my husband and I get back to the backcountry with our little guy. And most definitely on Grandpa's boat when we visit him.
What dream outdoors trip do you want to do?
I would love to sail to the Galapagos!
Erica won a Garmin Etrex 20! Thank you
