What prize did you win? How excited are you about it?
Deuter Carrier
One lucky winner won a child carrier from Deuter!
Onya Baby Carrier
Jenny Gorsegner hiked with Abby and Henry (1 year) and said, “I love Onya! I won a carrier and it is going to be so wonderful! It will be my branch Onya, so I can loan it out to folks. The Onya has been the only carrier that has worked for both my husband and me. It has all the bells and whistles that you could possibly need. Plus, it is comfortable enough for me to wear around the house with a fussy baby or tandem carrying both of them. It has truly been a lifesaver for me to get outside without the stroller on my own.”
KEEN Footwear (1 pair)
Lindsay Robison hiked with Emmett (11 months) and said, “Keen shoes! This is beyond perfect, since I JUST picked out some Keens this weekend to add to my Christmas list. I'm looking forward to having winter hiking boots and hitting the trails that can be cold, windy and muddy this time of year.”
Oakiwear Rainsuit
Janet Shea hiked with Logan (11 Months) and said, “We won the Oakiwear Rainsuit and are very excited! There couldn't have been a more perfect prize for a PNW baby to win. :) Logan will be enjoying it on future HiB30 Challenges for sure.”
How many miles and/or minutes did you achieve?
Jenny - 38.91 miles and 1565 minutes.
Lindsay - 87.62 miles.
Janet - 35 miles.
What did you enjoy most about this HiB30 Challenge?
Jenny - This challenge was tricky with the weather changing and learning how to layer my one-year-olds to keep them comfortable. However, seeing folks around the world working on the same issues helped remind me that I wasn't alone. I most enjoyed slowing down for this challenge. It became less about the mileage and more about breathing outside air. It also helped me appreciate, rather than dread, the changing seasons.
Lindsay - Oh gosh, what didn't we enjoy? I feel like Emmett and I are in an AWESOME groove when it comes to hiking/walking. It's an (almost) guaranteed few hours a day for us that I know we'll both be content and happy. I get great exercise, whether it's a fast-paced stroller walk to the park, a hike with the HIB Austin crew in the beautiful city park a stone's throw from our house, or a post-nap carry hike taking our dog around the neighborhood and enjoying sunset. And, it's a fun time to point out nature, play peek-a-boo with our carrier mirror or sing fun songs.
Janet - The motivation to get outside. It gets harder this time of year with decreasing daylight, lower temperatures, and the rain. Having a goal helps get us out the door.
Who helped keep your family motivated the most to get outside?
Jenny - My husband has always been into working out, but I never have. So on days when the gloom of the season threatened to keep us indoors, he powered us through. We even went on a six-mile hike, which was the farthest we have hiked with our kids. I was content turning around early, but he kept us going. He also willingly rehiked a lot of the trail looking for dropped mittens and binkies.
Lindsay - Our dog! He's too big to participate in our stroller walks, so we got out twice a day and carried so he could enjoy a family walk too, since my husband doesn't get home until it's dark.
Janet - Logan, because I know it is good for him.
What accomplishment are you most proud of this Challenge?
Jenny - I was pleasantly surprised that we broke 30 miles. In the previous challenge, we hiked nearly 75 miles, but the majority of that was on daily walks around our neighborhood. With the weather change, those walks became much less frequent. We actually managed a lot of trail miles this time around, which was great!
Lindsay - Leading my first hike! I was so tickled that many of my HIB friends came out to support us, and several of my mom friends from other groups came for their first ever HIB hike.
Janet - Reaching 30 this time. This is our lowest mileage yet, but it has been the hardest month, so we are happy with it.
Why should families around the world join in the HiB30 Challenges?
Jenny - Hike it Baby gives me some purpose and something to do every week. Being a mom has been a huge adjustment for me and leaving my previous job to take care of my kids has been difficult. What I most miss is having people to talk to, a social connection. It is often lonely in my house. So when I feel disconnected, Hike it Baby gives me a community. It has also been this incredibly valuable resource. All the questions about layering or carrying babies as well as the worries and logistics about getting outside with my kids have been answered and reassured just by joining this wonderful group of people. I get to be inspired by their experiences, see new places to travel, and feel less alone in my house.
Lindsay - Because they are a blast! It's such a fun way to challenge yourselves, spend time together, and get outside.
Did you have a moment when you thought you may not make the goal you set for yourself? How did you get past it?
Lindsay - I set three goals for myself. We ended up not making our personal goal of 100 miles outside, but I reminded myself that we still had countless amazing hikes and beat our 75 miles in September! The hike lead definitely got me out of my comfort zone, and doing more carry walks with our dog was also very important to me.
