What prize did you win? How excited are you about it?
Stonz Booties
Heidi Schertz hiked with Graham (2 years) and Warren (4 months) and said, “I won the Stonz booties. I'm ridiculously excited about it. Our branch lead has a pair for her kiddo and I've eyeing getting some for Warren. It'll be nice for him to get some new boots, since I think hand me down boots from Graham won't be a reality, he wears those things right out!”
LARABARS (2 Boxes of 16 full sized bars)
Lindsey Rhodes-Purdy hiked with Hank (8 months).
Garmin Vivofit
Leslie Manning hiked with Liliana (11 months) and said, “I won a Garmin Vivofit! I am so surprised to win and so excited to give it a try. I like the idea of a daily personal goal and am so excited to use the Vivofit to help me reach my personal December goal of 30 miles in 30 days.”
Hike it Baby Babyclava
Christin Grieser hiked with Michael (2 years) and Analise (8 months) and said, “The babyclava. Super excited because my little one is always taking off her hat or her hat gets messed up when she turns her head. Ready for some winter hiking!”
Another lucky winner won the Hike it Baby Babyclava!
How many miles and/or minutes did you achieve?
Heidi - 30 miles and 1630 minutes.
Lindsey - 46.99 miles.
Leslie - 20 miles (Did not meet our goal for November).
What did you enjoy most about this HiB30 Challenge?
Heidi - I loved a couple things about this challenge. The first was how many miles Graham (my 2 year old) walked by himself. The second thing I loved was how he started asking to go on "Hike! Yes!" The last thing was getting into better personal shape for myself.
Lindsey - I loved exploring my city and finding new, beautiful places to hike. I especially loved bonding with other rad mamas and having outdoor bonding time with my boy. Outside is his favorite place to be!
Leslie - I loved the HiB30 challenge because it gave my family a goal to be active outside every day. Unfortunately we did not reach our goal (we had a bout of the flu pass through our house) but we are determined to try again for the month of December and get to 30 miles this month.
Christin - Trying new trails and finding other moms and kiddos with which to hike.
Who helped keep your family motivated the most to get outside?
Heidi - My sister, who had just finished the Appalachian Trail in September, really helped to keep me and us motivated. She was always willing to go walking or hiking with us. I found her accomplishment inspiring to me as I worked to meet my own small goal.
Lindsey - Honestly, since my son loves the outdoors so much, he was my motivation to get out and go on hikes. I'm in awe at how much he loves being outdoors and it has since rubbed off on me.
Christin - Me!
What accomplishment are you most proud of this Challenge?
Heidi - We finished! We got outside! And hopefully we've created good habits to continue to get outside on a regular basis. Also, of the 30 miles we walked Graham walked approximately 20 of those. I'm so proud of that. Which is just awesome for his 2 year old little self.
He wanted to walk a lot of the way and I had to remind myself to let him exercise that independence. It meant shorter walks for us and a harder time meeting our 30 mile goal, but it was so worth it.
Lindsey - I'm proud that we got as many miles as we did. I thought I'd be lucky enough to get 30, but we ended up with 46!
Leslie - We went to visit family during the holidays and my mom and sister were happy to join us for a stroll down by the beach. It was a great way to spend time together and catch up as a family.
Christin - That we went out on the last day. I really wanted to throw in the towel because it wasn’t going as well as I wanted.
Why should families around the world join in the HiB30 Challenges?
Heidi - Watching the change in my kids as they enjoyed the outdoors more and more was so inspiring. Getting outside and hiking and camping is something I did a lot with my family when I was young. I wanted to share that love with my kids. Some days weren't great, but in the end we were always happier for getting outside. Graham loved watching all the wildlife and Warren would stare at the trees calmly.
My biggest tip would be to start small and set little goals, but every once in a while do something you think will be hard. Some of the best moments on this challenge came after I decided to do a black hike. I wasn't sure I could do it. But I tried and it felt awesome.
Lindsey - Being outdoors and connecting with other mothers has really kept me excited about being my boy's mom. I think the adventure factor is the number one reason why all parents should get outside with their kids. Adventures outside plant seeds and make memories that kids keep with them forever.
Leslie - HiB 30 is a great challenge to get families outside and moving. Like all families, we have our busy routines, but HiB 30 motivated us to get outside every day. When I get home from work, all I really want to do is relax at home but I found that walking around the neighborhood with my daughter and husband was a great way to decompress and a nice time for my husband and I to talk about our days.
Christin - Just do what you can and focus on the fun, not the numbers.
Did you have a moment when you thought you may not make the goal you set for yourself? How did you get past it?
Heidi - The 29th of November I had input my last hike and had 1.4 miles left. The next day was of course miserable in terms of weather, naps, mood. No one was happy. No one wanted to hike, least of all me. I knew I would be walking on pavement instead of a trail due to timing. I seriously wondered if it would matter if I pushed those 1.4 miles off to the next day. Finally I just decided that those 1.4 miles were going to happen. We loaded up our cranky selves, wrapped up against the rain, and I walked us as fast as I could. We got home wet and happy.
Lindsey - We had a few days with some not so pleasant weather, but, I wanted to hit my 30 mile goal so we just went on longer hikes on the nicer days.
Leslie - We didn't meet our goal for the month of November but we are going to try again for the month of December (and again with the official HiB 30 in January). And now that we won the Vivofit, we are determined to meet our goal and earn this awesome prize.
