Andrew Banks hiked with Julian (15 months) and said, “We won a copy of the book Raise a Wild Child, by Dr. Scott Sampson. I taught outdoor education for ten years and believe in the value and importance of being outside and connecting with the natural world. This book has been on my radar, and I'm very excited to read it!”
The Freeloader Child Carrier
Lora Waloski hiked with Jarek (1 year) and said, “The Freeloader! My son is too small for it for a little while, but I'm looking forward to having an ergonomic option to carry him when he runs out of steam on the trails as he gets older. It will also be an incredible asset to my Salt Lake City, Utah and soon to be Cache Valley, Utah branches to loan out to others to try and find a system best for them. Thank you so much for the prize donation!”
The Shrunks Outdoor Toddler Bed
Stacy Brown hiked with Jake (5 months) and said, “I won the shrunk toddler bed! I am so excited my husband said I would never win anything I can't wait to show him haha, you really do win things yay! We are going to love using it when we go camping at some favorite spots and our lake property when our son gets a little older to sleep in it!”
How many miles and/or minutes did you achieve?
Molly - 32.74 miles and 718 minutes.
Andrew - 22 miles and 900 minutes logged, but actually did about double that.
Lora - I forgot to log the majority of both...
Stacy - 22 miles.
What did you enjoy most about this HiB30 Challenge?
Andrew Banks
Molly - I enjoyed learning about new trails in the concrete jungle that Houston is and making new friends! I also loved that it really challenged me to go to as many HiB hikes as I could.
Andrew - I really enjoyed going on long walks along country roads with my wife and her parents during our visit to rural Michigan for Thanksgiving. A particular highlight was when we all splashed around in a mud puddle together!
Lora - The option to use minutes instead of miles was great as my son learned to walk over this challenge and he's not as inclined to stay in a carrier as long as he used to.
Stacy - I love that this challenge helped me get outside when the weather started to change. Fall is my favorite time of year and I enjoyed that Jake got to see all the vibrant color changes.
Who helped keep your family motivated the most to get outside?
Molly - Myself and my daughter. I don't like to leave things unfinished if I can help it. Also, I don't want to deprive my daughter of the outdoors just because I don't feel like walking certain days.
Andrew - Our little one was the one who most motivated us to get outside. He loves to be outdoors and is very expressive and adamant when he wants to go outside. It's one of the things that is almost guaranteed to improve his mood if he's feeling cranky.
Lora - My HiB branch co-leads are amazing, and even with a crazy schedule with college and my son's birthday and too many things going on they still encouraged me to get out.
Stacy - Hike it baby did! I try and lead a hike once a week so I for sure make it to one if there are no other hikes that fit my schedule. I love having other people to hike with for the company and the safety.
What accomplishment are you most proud of this Challenge?
Molly - Not leaving everything until the last minute! My hikes were fairly spaced I felt.
Andrew - Introducing our little one to snow was a fun accomplishment this challenge. He was not excited about it at first and didn't even want to be put down in the snow. His curiosity prevailed, however, and he now likes to touch and examine the snow with careful deliberation of a scientist.
Stacy - With this challenge I did not hit the goal of 30 miles like my last challenge, but I still accomplished leading a hike once a week and getting outside.
Why should families around the world join in the HiB30 Challenges?
Molly - They're fun and the added support through the Facebook page is nice!
Andrew - Taking my baby for a walk or a hike is something I do as much for me as for Baby. Being a stay at home parent can often feel exhausting, demanding, and lonely, so strapping the baby into a carrier or stroller and going for a nice long walk offers me much needed respite. Sometimes I hike solo and enjoy the quiet and a sense of being alone (my kiddo is usually so content in the stroller or carrier that even though he is with me it kind of feels like alone time). Other times when I am craving socialization I join a Hike It Baby hike and get to commune with other parents while enjoying some exercise and outside time. The HIB30 challenges give me extra incentive to get outside, especially on those days when I feel overwhelmed by the chores or other things that need doing. I can prioritize taking some time be outside and move, because it's not just self-indulgence -- I need to earn those miles!!!
Lora - Having a cheering squad along the way encourages everyone to get out, even if you and your family are alone on the trails. It's hard to motivate through the to do lists of everyday existence, and you need to find a way to make getting out a priority.
Stacy - I love how motivating it is to be part of the challenge. I think other families should join the challenge to motivate your family to get out of the house and enjoy mother natures gift it gives you the extra push to not skip getting out.
Did you have a moment when you thought you may not make the goal you set for yourself? How did you get past it?
Molly - Yes. We had a lot of rain, making it hard, but I just decided a little rain never hurt anyone and did a couple walks in the rain.
Andrew - For me it's never hard to reach 30 miles; the hard part is sitting down at the computer and logging them in! This challenge I utterly failed to log all our miles, and you know what, I'm ok with that. It was useful to me to accept that I had more important things to do than keep the log up to date. Although it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that "if it's not on Facebook it never really happened," my family and I enjoyed our unlogged miles and minutes just as much as our logged ones!
Stacy - I almost skipped leading a hike on the Thanksgiving week because I figured no one would come and I should do things around the house. Well I pushed myself to get out even if no one showed up I can get in a nice walk before I am busy and I never regret going but would regret not going.
